who-owns-whom

Some business owners refer to their companies lovingly as “2nd marriages”. When an entrepreneur hasn’t learned the ways of designing a self-sufficient business, the venture begin to take precedence over all else, and before long your business owns you.

For some people, their business is their life. They have become a slave to their creation, and they. Proper perspective on this problem is key to solving it.

Your business must serve your life, not the other way around. What you create is an extension of who you are. Even though your business exists to serve others, it must also serve you.

This involves getting your personal priorities in order. What is most important to you in your life? Family? Work? God? You must take time to evaluate your values, and order them top down, from most important to least important.

Then you need to live your life in a way that exemplifies those priorities. If your family is of higher priority than your work, yet your work seems to be taking over your life, it’s obvious you’ll want to do something about that.

One of the best books I’ve ever read on this subject is First Things First by Dr. Stephen Covey.
